"Mr. and Mrs. George A. Winn Observe 25th Anniversary On Sunday, October 14th, from five until eight o'clock, the fine old Winn homestead at 57 Summer street was thrown open to friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Winn, who came to greet them, informally on the occasion of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. This old house is one of a few that have been preserved, and now stands an example of a real New Enlgand home. In many of the rooms are rare old pieces of furniture that have always been a part of the house, now owner, the late Albert Winn, who was representative to the General Court from 1853 to 1861, inclusive, and a selectman of Arlington from 1847 to 1857 inclusive, and assessor for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Winn were assisted in receiving by the former's only sister, Miss Nina Winn, who is assistant librarian in the public library in Framingham. In the dining room, light refreshments were served from a table where choice old china and silver were enhanced in beauty by the lovely floral center piece. Mrs. Edward Kelley, a sister to Mrs. Winn, assisted in the dining room. The rooms were filled with flowers, many from the guests, but a large quantity of rare dahlias came from the gardens of Mrs.. David Buttrick, of Summer street, a sister of Mrs. Winn. Mr. and Mrs. Winn were married in Cambridge by the Rev. Henry Cook of the Baptist church of that city. Mrs. Winn was born Mabel C. Hartwell, daughter of the late Osman and Esther Phelps Hartwell. Her ancestors came here from England in 1630, and settled in Concord. The old house is still standing and occupied, although not by relatives. Mr. Winn is the son of the late George Prentice Winn and Malissa Bacon Winn who, like his father, was a prominent citizen of the town, and served for years on the Water Board. Mrs. Winn is active in the Women's Alliance connected with the First Parish (Unitarian) church in which the Winn family has always been identified; also an active member of the Arlington Historical Society, besides a member of the Arlington Women's Club. The three children of the couple- George A., Jr., who is a sophomore at Brown University; Albert and Barbara, the former a post graduate of Arlington High School, and the later a senior of the High School, assisted their parents at the reception in the home now housing the fourth generation of a family that has had a prominent place in the town's social, religious and civic life. Several pieces of silver were presented the couple at this time, but gifts for the most part were in the form of checks." |
