Medium sized book with a moderately plain brown cover and a geometric black border stamped around the edge. The left-hand edge is all black, and the book is bound with a piece of black string. Contains a series of newspaper articles from the Arlington Advocate about Arlington Forty-Niners, originally presented by the Historical Society. Also contains some articles about the history of the Arlington Historical society and the Jason Russell House, including an artice about the Jason Russell House becoming the headquarters of the Historical Society. Also contains a series of articles about a $25,000 gift given to the Historical Society in 1951, given by George A. Smith and Elizabeth Abbot Smith, to purchase several properties surrounding the Jason Russell House. There are also several articles about the 50th anniversery of the historical society, which included a dinner for about 175 quests at the First Parish (Unitarian) Church, which included songs, a short play, and various talks. Also contains articles discussing talks given by members of the Historical Society, as well as articles discussing elections. One article contains mention of a stone doorstep, given by Mrs. Walter K. Hutchinson, taken from the old Blake House (on Massachusetts Avenue near Wyman Terrace), and installed at the side door of the Russell House which faces Mass Ave. Contains several articles and advertisements about a concert given by the Historical Society on April 20, 1928, at the town hall. Also contains articles about other events given by the Historical Society, such as teas or tours given. Many of the articles include accounts of April 19, 1775. There are also many mentions of needing a fireproof building for the storage of the Historical Society. Last few pages contain some articles about Patriots' Day and Arlington's role in the American Revolution. Also contains some articles about Rev. William W. Lewis becoming the new minister at the First Parish Church. Pages are wrinkled, and mostly loose from the binding. Articles date from between 1928 till 1955. Many of the articles are undated, but most appear to be from local newspapers. |
