Letter from Eunice Bemis Russell to her son Josiah Russell, dated November 6 1821. The letter is on a single sheet of paper that has split into three pieces. All together, the letter is 11 3/4 by 7 1/8 inches. On the back of the letter is a note to Josiah from Thomas H Teel. Letter speaks of a former letter written by Josiah's wife, and to the ill health of Josiah. It makes reference to something having displeased his father (Noah Russell), and a desire to know more what is happening in Josiah's life. There is apparently a previous letter which she speaks of having displeased his father, and asks him to write another. She asks him to come home, noting that she would prefer to have him and his wife "instead of strangers" and that "we have to hire all the time." Josiah, you're breaking your mother's heart! Note on back from Thomas Hall Teel (brother-in-law) - Thomas is also offended. He notes that Josiah did not mention his name in the last letter, despite his promise. End is hard to decipher, some note about his father reminding him that he had letters, perhaps an additional chide to write more. It seems that Josiah doesn't write often enough for his family. He was living in Bellevill, NJ? at the time. |
