The document seems to contain various texts. It is unclear whether the reverse note to Deacon Joseph Adams is a continuation of the text on the front page. Based on the date on the reverse side, the document may have been written on March 15th by the assesors Walter Russell, Ephraim Frost Jr., and George Cutter Jr.(?). It is worthy of note that this document begins with the phrase "The State of the Massachusetts Bay Middlesex..." Previous notices began with "In his majesties name" and ended with a mention of the "reign" of the king. This notice required the constable of the northwest precinct of Cambridge, Caleb Hovey, to notify freeholders and inhabitants of the area as well as those of Charlestown, who are qualified to vote, to attend a town meeting. The meeting would take place at the meetinghouse on March 24th at 1pm. The tasks required for the meeting (numbered 1-6) were to choose precinct officers for the following year; to offer a sum of money for Reverend Samuel Cooke's salary; to grant a sum of money to cover charges arising in the precinct; to know if the inhabitants would hire a collector to collect taxes and if not, what they would give the collector; to know if the inhabitants would contribute once every three months for the salary of Reverend Samuel Cooke; to know if the inhabitants would appropriate any part of the money granted by the town to the precinct for schooling; and if they would choose a committee to regulate that or any of the above tasks. The reverse has a note addressed to Deacon Joseph Adams, treasurer for the precinct. It says that they certify that they assesed the poles and (?) Estate in the precinct. They also delivered the list of the 1776 assesment to Samuel Whittemore Jr.(?), the collector for the precinct. He was to collect and pay the sum to Adams or his sucessor on or before July 11. The bottom of the reverse contains a list of numbers likely connected to the assesors, as well as the name "Charlestown" written multiple times. |
