"Mrs. Sarah Winn, Town's Oldest Resident, Dies Mrs. Sarah Ann (Daniels) Winn of 37 Summer street died on Monday in her 99th year. She was the oldest inhabitant of Arlington. Mrs. Winn was born on July 19, 1844, in West Cambridge, in the house which served in 1836 and 1837 as the town's first public library. She was the daughter of John Porter Daniels and Eleanor Sophia Whittemore. She married Albert Winn Jr., in 1867. She was a lineal descendent of Robert Daniel of Watertown, who came to this country in 1635; Richard Cutter, 1640, and William Whittemore, both of Menotomy; William Munroe of Lexington, 1651, and Jonathan Fairbanks of Dedham, 1633. A great grandfather, George Monroe, killed at the Battle of Monmouth, N.J., in 1776, was a brother to Ensign Robert Munroe, killed on Lexington Green, April 19, 1775. Another ancestor was Henry Dunster, first president of Harvard College. She had lived all her life in Arlington until last autumn, when she was taken to a nursing home in West Newton after a fall in which she broke her shoulder. She was a charter member, as well as the oldest member of the Arlington historical Society. She is survived by two nieces, Miss Eudora Daniels and Dr. Amy L. Daniels of Simsbury, Connecticut, and by three nephews- George H. Daniels of Newton, Major Harold C. Daniels, U.S. Marine Corps, and Nathan Robbins of Arlington. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in her old home, now the residence of Miss Nina Winn, at 37 Pleasant street, with the Rev. John Nicol Mark, minister of the First Parish church, officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery." |
