Large book with light brown leather covers, with a string binding. The word "Scrap Book" is written on the bottom right corner. Scrapbook is wrapped in a paper case with Velcro closures, with the object ID written on the side of the paper case, along with the date and subject. Contains documents related to the career of George Harris, long time selectman of Arlington. This scrapbook contains documents mainly from 1953 through 1955, mostly newspaper clippings, but also photos, letters, and town documents. Includes numerous articles about important town events during that time frame: a protest against the rerouting of Route 3 that would have cut through residential neighborhoods , a 3-alarm fire at the Crosby Elementary School on Winter Street, a protest against 'indecent literature', protests against the cutting back on train service through Arlington. Also includes an articles detailing the Patriot's Day celebration in Arlington in 1954, which involved the receipt of scrolls from the mayors of Boston and Cambridge and a symbolic horse ride. Also includes articles about blood donations and cancer drives. There are some articles related specifically to the town government, including articles detailing the salary of officials, deaths of town employees, warrents for town meetings, and the town elections of 1953 and 1955. For the elections, there are some documents related specifically to Harris's campaign, as well as more general news. There are also several documents related to the Middlesex County Selectmen's Association. There are several photos of Harris as a selectman, both cut out from newspapers, and original copies of the same photo. There are also several letters written to Harris, commenting on his activities as a selectman. There are also a few misc. documents, including some newspaper clippings about Eisenhower's campaign, and a page from the Arlington Advocate from 1971, which includes Annabel Parker's (Mrs. Harold B. Wood), obituary. Many of the pages of the scrapbook have come loose from the binding. There are also several loose clippings, photographs, and other documents, some of which have notes written on the back. Many of the clippings have dates written on them. [1953 - 1955] |
