Envelope from Oxidite Manufacturing Co. Note attached reads: "Oxidite Mfg. has a listing in the 1912-13 directory but never again. Wm. F. Brown listed as manager, at 26 Marathon St. Described as in the "cold water paints" business for Oxidite. By 1914 Brown is listed at 84 Hillside Ave. A.H. Brown out of town by 1920. As 26 Marathon was a single-family house with not even a garage, I tend to doubt that Oxidite was manufactured in Arlington. Do you suppose he was a manufacturer's rep? I'm thinking that Oxidite probably was some sort of "fireproofing" paint -- possibly made with asbestos. Asbestos-infused whitewashes were popular for perceived durability, sanitation, etc. I get chills thinking of it coming from the spray-guns of Arlington in the roaring '20s." |
