The land had a hill in the center with steep slopes on all sides. Potter landscaped the Grove and allowed the public access, including to photographers. He sold nearly half his land in 1873 after suffering financial loses and sold the rest of the land in 1875 before moving to Germany. |

Worked as printer starting age 17, became state printer of Massachusetts in 1851. Invented a knitting machine and supplied socks to Union troops during the Civil Wat. Became president of brick company in 1871. Elected selectman in 1865. Was then State Representative and State Senator. Consul to Stuttgart, Germany in 1875 Active in the movement to change the name of the town to Arlington. |
