Description |
Stereo slide by P. Durnam, Tailor. Pink paper, orange edge. Stereo slide of a House on Main St. showing sign. Info from Richard Duffy: The two buildings were a couple of doors east of the corner of today's Massachusestts Ave. and Pleasant St. Today they occupy the drive through and part of the parking lot of the Cambridge Savings Bank. Peter Durnan's tailor shop is at far right. The next building beyond had its second floor remodeled about 1870. It was the first home to the Arlington Advocate newspaper (upstairs), with the pharmacy of Davies Dodge (downstairs). Furthest building in clear view was owned by Joseph Merrifield, who was a tinsmith--an incredibly valuable trade in the era before central heat was common -- big volume making tin pipes connecting to chimneys for the smoke from heating stoves were in demand -- both building the pipes and properly installing them. Addresses in the 1860s were pretty general, such as "Main St., across from RR depot," or "Main, across from steam cars depot." Last note on the image: if you look at the street you'll see the single pair of tracks for the horse street railway. They did not run down the center of the road, but on the south side of it, crossing at Pond Street and then running along the north side of the road into Cambridge. |
