Description |
1860 Confederate; marked "A. Owensby"; tin support; taken from Rebel soldier at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Missouri, in the S.W. Knife 17" (A) Scabbard 21" (B) D-guard bowie knife, robust blade with pronounced clip point appears to have been forged from a large file or rasp, black diagonal parallel lines that appear on the blade are remnants of the teeth of the tool used as material for the blade. Interestingly the blade is mounted edge up, so the cutting edge is opposite to the knuckle bow. The knuckle bow is forged from a single piece of iron or steel, to protect the knuckles and back of the hand. There is a varnished leather covering over the knuckle bow. The grip is made from a cylindrical piece of wood. The sheath is made from leather folded and sewn along the left edge, a leather tab with belt loops protrudes from the mouth of the sheath. The sheath is reinforced with soldered tin pieces along the mouth and bottom of the sheath, along with vertical and horizontal bands. Difficult to read inscriptions scratched into tin reinforcements on front of the sheath. |
