Bayonet, Socket |
Description |
Bayonet with the leather sheath appears to be the older of the two bayonets, attributed to Sam Whittemore, possibly used in battle on April 18, 1775. The bayonet features a steel socket to fit over a musket barrel, with the L-shaped cuts to engage the bayonet lug and lock into place. The neck of the bayonet extends from the front of socket then curves upwards into the blade. At the base of the neck a slight fissure is visible, where the blade was joined to the socket. The bayonet has a long and slender blade of triangular cross section. The base of the bayonet blade has a raised semi-circular lip where the blade connects to the neck. The bayonet is somewhat roughly forged, and stylistically similar to 18th centtury bayonets, possibly a colonial American made bayonet? The simple leather sheath is also triangular in cross section, with a central seam running along the blade's cental ridge. Note: 2 socket bayonets, one with leather sheath, one without, were wrapped in paper under the same object ID (1907.11.2), found with small sticky tags with number (1907.11.4a - NOT in Past Perfect). Bayonet with sheath stays as 1907.11.2, second bayonet renumbered as 1907.11.2* to avoid confusion. |
