Description |
Model 1850 Union Foot Officer's sword manufactured by Collins & Co. Hartford, Connecticut. The sword has a slightly curved, single edged blade with a set of wide fullers (grooves) that begin just above the ricasso and end about 2/3rds up the blade towards the point, there is a second pair of slightly shorter and more narrow fullers along the spine of the blade. Both sides of the blade have decorative etching, There is an eagle carrying olive branches and a banner with a Latin inscription on the right side, and "U.S." surrounded by vine motifs on the left side of the blade. "Collins and Co Hartford Connecticut 1862" stamped on left side of ricasso (blunt section at base of the blade". Cast brass guard and pommel with floral motifs, the grip is wood, covered in a thin textile, then wrapped in shark skin with the seam along the front edge. Spiral grooves pass all the way down the grip, likely for metal wire that is now missing. Flexible leather scabbard, with brass reinforcements at the mouth and tip. The mouth piece has a metal band with a single suspension loop. 6" handle, jeweled, with flower design, brass 35" blade' 34" scabbard, leather, iron top with ring. |
