Fifteen cents. Fractional. Green reverse. 3/1863 Fractional This fifteen cent note is a part of the fourth series of "fractional currency" that was between July 14, 1869 and February 16, 1875. Paper Fractional Currency started to be issued during the Civil War by the Union in order to keep track of currency as coins of the same value were a struggle to being tracked by the citizens due to hoarding of the coins. Five different series was issued by the Union. Paper Fractional Currency ended in February 1876 after Congress ordered the minting of silver coins at an efficient enough rate to discourage hoarding in place of the obsolete paper fractional currency. This particular fifteen cent note was printed during the fourth series, which was issued from July 14, 1869-February 16, 1875. This particular note contains a portrait of a woman wearing a roman helmet with stars around the brim, depicting Columbia (a female goddess representation of Christopher Columbus). The front also contains the phrase "Furnished only by the Assistant Treasurers and Designated Depositories of the United States". The back side of the bill contains a vertical numeric 15 on each side as well as the text "This note is exchangeable for United States notes by the Asst Treasuries and Designated Depositaries of the United States in sums not less than three dollars receivable in payment of all dues to the United States, less than five dollars, except customs". |
