Description |
Watercolor painting of 3 young girls playing in front of the Arlington Reservoir. In the bottom left quarter, there are 3 young girls. Two of them are standing wearing blue knee length dresses and appear to be talking with each other. One of them has reddish hair and is facing away from the viewer. Her left arm is held out, and appears to be holding a piece of cloth attached to her collar. The second has brown hair and a hat and is facing towards the viewer with her arms held in front of her waist. The third is kneeling in profile in the grass in front of them, and has on a light purple dress and a hat. She has something in her hands that may be a basket. The girls are located between two trees and a third tree is on the right side of the painting. Behind them is a body of water with a hill rising in the background. The hill is highest in the center, with the right side sloping gradually downwards. Directly behind the girls is a small number of buildings that are probably associated with each other. The buildings are located on a flat area, with steep cliffs above and below them. There appears to be a dirt path on the far side of the lake. In the bottom left corner is a signature, which is some initials overlayed, followed by a date of July 17/81. A letter sent by the donor, 2007.13.3, describes the painting and some of its history. It originally belonged to Margaret Elder, who is one of the girls in the painting. She probably lived at or near to 86 Westminster Ave., Arlington Heights. The location is identified as being the Lexington side of the Arlington Reservoir, with the hill being Mount Gilboa. Although the donor estimates the painting to be from the 1860s or 1870s, the date listed by the signature is probably more accurate. |
