Paper money, twenty dollars, Confederate 2/17/1864, 3.25 x 7.25" blue reverse, Series 2 No. 16518A, Series 3rd No. 15319A, No. Number C, Series 1st----->, Series 2nd, No. 171709, Series 2nd No. 173749H When the Confederacy seceded from the Union, they started to print their own money. Five twenty dollar bills (nos. unknown, 173749, 171409, 25394, and 16518) printed by the Confederate States of America. On all of them is the Tennessee State Capitol with a portrait of Alexander Stephens at the bottom right corner. These bills were signed by various clerks, The first four bills were made official on April 6, 1863. They were stamped the date they were first put in use in red ink to make sure that the holder was reminded to put these notes into six percent interest savings bonds. The bill issued later is unique in this bill is printed on pink paper as opposed to plain, is missing the date stamp, the back has a 20 in each of the four corners instead of on each side, and there is a twenty in the arabic number system on the top right corner on the front and the word "twenty" is written out in large letters at the center of the back as opposed to using two "X" roman numerals in both locations. |
