Description |
Large glass cup or tumbler, with worn sticker pasted to top. Writing on sticker is faded and mostly indecipherable. Transcript of note: ______ [tt]e* passed [to] _______ _______________his [way] to the [Battle]________[in Lexington.]He __ at the [house] of Colonel Wellington _________[bot]di[e]* [at the] Battle of [Bunker Hill]__________________ *Based on record for 1925.18.1, tte is probably the end of Lafayette, and botdie reads soldier. Potentially 1925.18.1, location unknown. The two items have similar dimensions. 1925.18.1 describes the "paper inside indecipherable," which could be another way of describing the sticker on the glass. Transcription given for note is partially guided by the original accession record for 1925.18.1: Glass Tumbler used by Gen. Lafayette when he passed through West Cambridge, (now Belmont) in 1824 on his way to the battleground in Lexington. He stopped at the house of Col. Jeduthan Wellington, who was a soldier at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Gen. Lafayette drank cider from this glass. Original description, A.2.153: Cup with unreadable note on a sticker. |
