1779 No. 1952 Continental Detail: Pine tree 2 5/8 X 3 sewed to paper Paper money - four shillings Issued by the State of Massachusetts The British Unit "Shilling" was the equivalent of twelve pence. The front of this note contains the phrase "Four Shillings" with a pine tree beneath it. The back of the note contains the number 1952 as well as the writing, "Shall be paid to the bearer of this Bill by the 1 Day of Decem 1782 agreeable to an Act of the Gen. Court of said State ". For this particular denomination the sun emblem rises from the left of the hill (as opposed to other Massachusetts Shilling Denonimations, which contain a sun emblem, but the position of the sun varies among the denimations). |
