Description |
7 inch x 17 inch sampler silk thread on linen ground. Include seafoam/teal in two tones, yellow, dark brown, pale blue, pink, tan, and cream. Some colors could have faded. Mostly cross stitch with a few small examples of eyelet stitch or punchwork. Stitches very tight in places and pull on rough ground inconsistencies. Loose threads along bottom. Motif includes two sets of uppercase letters in 2 different styles - one simpler block style and one more ornate cursive-type with curling tails. Two alphabets followed by series of numbers 1 through 12 in one stitch style. Two trees (one large with pink fruit and one small with two branches, and a federal era house stitched at the bottom. House is three story federal style with double chimney (with stem stitch), three stories, central door. House could be the school but also could be a simplified version of her father's house - The Ephraim Cutter House -- which was built in 1805 Name on sampler Eliza Ann Cutter, Aged Eight 1817 |
