Description |
Square sampler of silk on linen ground. Composed entirely of cross stitch in a variety of colors - dark green, mustard yellow, rust, dark purple, three tones of green, navy, pink, and pale blue. Detailed border of straight lines around a wavy motif. Capital block letters and ampersand followed by numbers 1 through 8, and then lower case letters followed by upper case cursive style letter with looping tails, and then a series of simple decorative medallions. Text reads "Caroline Harris Fiske in the eighth year of her age" and then the beginnings of a greek key pattern which continues on next line and ends abruptly. Last line reads "Boston 1832" followed by a series of Xs. There is a small partial motif in black and pink which appears to be unfinished or has unraveled. Caroline Harris Fiske sampler - original record says 1838 but appears to be 1832 |
