Women's Dress: Gray and white pinstripe stripe silk bodice, gray bodice insert. Carved mother of pearl buttons. Polonaise, underskirt missing. Fashion from 1860s, resurgence from 1770s-80s, inspired by polish dress (hence the name), gown over skirt, often called "Dolly Varden" after a heroine in a Dickens novel set in 1780. Original accession sheet reads, "Textile. Dress. Grey and white striped satin, with grey taffeta insert at waist, with incised mother of perl oval buttons, fitted, scalloped hem with train effect." |
