Description |
Side drum, with unknown maker. Probably made in United States, potentially in 1784. Carried by Joseph Dickson, in either the War of 1812 or in 1862 during the Civil War. Donated by George H. Shirley. Shell of hardwood painted green,with harbor scene showing a ship and sunset. Motto encircling scene: "SIGILLUM REIPUBLICAE NEO HANTONIIENSIS. 1784." Around the motto is a spray of berries and a star at the bottom. Eight rope holes. Drum skins are missing. Shell diameter 390mm, shell height 365 (?) mm. (15 1/2" x 14 7/8") Wooden with shoulder strap. Shoulder strap not found with drum. |
