Josiah Russell Papers |
Scope & Content |
Collection of papers from the Russell and Teel families, including letters, military orders, and deeds. Many of the papers are related to Josiah Russell, son of Noah Russell and Eunice Bemis. Josiah was in Belleville, New Jersey for much of the period in question. In 1814, he was appointed sergeant of a company in the Massachusetts militia and the collection includes several orders that he wrote. He resigned in 1816 and acquired land in Stafford, Connecticut in 1817, but was living in Belleville in the 1820s. 1. Nine letters, five of which are to Josiah Russell from members of his family. Many of the letters ask Josiah to come visit and write back. There are two letters from Thomas Teel to Mary Ann Russell, living in Newark in 1834, and two letters from Mary Bailey to Noah Russell. 2. Military related documents. Includes Josiah Russell's appointment as sergeant and resignation, as well as several orders he gave during that time. An undated list of male names is assumed to be related to his time in the military. 3. Two deeds: Joseph Hyde to Josiah Russell, Stanford, Connecticut, 1817. Noah Russell as guardian of property of Henrietta John, Newark, New Jersey, 1858. |
