Welch & Griffith's Saw Factory, 1872, on the site of the Arlington Gas Works, Grove St. In 1832 Charles Griffiths and William WElch of Birmingham, England, leased the mill site of Cyrus Cutter for 99 years and established the first saw factory in America. In 1839, James A.E. Bailey left Birmingham, England, to enter the firm and settled in West Cambridge. Between 1850 and 1865 new buildings of brick were added to the original wooden buildings, in 1885 the works shut down, and later the buildings were sold. |
