Marked "J.A.B." Haversack, black cloth, printed, flap and straps Civil War equipment of Sergt. James A. Bailey, Company E. 5th Reg. Mass. Volunteer Militia. Answering Pres. Lincoln's first call for troops, he left West Cambridge Apr. 19, 1861 for Washington, was stationed at Alexandria, Va. engaged in the battle of Bull Run, July 21; received honorable discharge and returned to Boston July 30, 1861.
