argeant James Alderson Bailey enlisted at the beginning of the Civil War when enlistment was limited to 3 months (he was onw of the so called "90 Day Men"). He saw action at the First Battle of Bull Run and was mustered out 10 days after the battle. Family lore has it that he saw the man next to him have his head blown off by a cannon ball. West Cambridge men were killed in the battle. His record is reflected in the History of Arlington. At the time of the Civil War, Arlington was called West Cambridge. Men who signed up on Lincoln's first call were called "Minutemen." He did not re-enlist after seeing this battle. According to his wife, he received "a medal" for his service, though she doesn't indicate what the medal was called or why he got it.
